Instagram. It’s the first thing I look at each day after my alarm plucks me from my sleep. Before Twitter and email. Even before the weather forecast. I love seeing other people’s lives and feeling like I’m a part of it. Seeing how their life looks provides me with a greater understanding of them. Some of the best photography is not the physically stunning scenery, it’s the snippets of real life: watching coffee brew on a windowsill, a blooming flower, toes immersed in water. Facebook recently purchased the SF-based Instagram for a staggering $1 billion. It’s what every start-up dreams of: to have your idea fill a niche so valuable, that you cannot possibly say no to the offer. And a billion is something few people would be able to turn down. But much like any big company gobbling up a smaller start-up, I imagine Instagram’s demise to be fairly swift. So, while the app still bringing me joy, here are my top 10 instagrammers to follow: 1. sandrajuto Sandra Juto is one of all-time …

Making a Commitment to My Life List

One of my dreams is to live in Germany. I adored taking German at school, and loved taking it at university. But it’s been a decade since any formal linguistic training, and I’m itching to get back to it. [Source: me] So I’ve made a commitment to improving my German because I enjoy learning, but also because I want to start making some of these Life List dreams happen! I have started learning through the Rosetta Stone program for German, and so far, we’re just covering stuff I already know. I’m interested in seeing if this Rosetta Stone is really as good as they say… Who knows if I’ll ever achieve #20 and #21 on my Life List, but what’s the harm in trying? [Source: me] What is something you have always wanted? What are you doing to make that happen? [Source: me]

Everything will be okay.

Back in Sydney, I once worked closely with a lovely woman who was in her mid 50s. Even as most women her age were looking forward to retiring and slowing down, she was vivacious, charismatic and had energy for days. And, rather importantly, she was an amazing campaign manager. As things would have it, she turned out to be a friend of my parents’ (Mum’s right when she says “you never want to talk about anyone…”) and over the course of the campaign, we became quite close. Her quirky habits started to make sense as I learnt more about her. She had recently lost the love of her life and her son within months of each other. Tragic story, and one I will always remember. But yet each day she seemed so… together. I really enjoyed being around her, learning a lot about Aussie political wheeling and dealing. It was great to watch her in action. When the votes had been counted, we celebrated the following day an amazing home right on Cronulla Beach. During …

The Dhalies: Pleasing With You EP

Every day I am lucky enough to spend time with my marvellous husband, the American. And whilst I try not to sound like a total braggart, he inspires me. Every single day. He inspires me to create and live the way we want to. Since the American resigned his post as a full-time golf pro, he’s been much happier and life is good. He’s creating a tonne, and has thrown himself into creating as much content as possible for his new (well, newly revamped) website at CommunistComics.com. And so now, to the big news: I wanted to share with you something we (very loosely me, more so the American’s doing) have been working on over the past month or so. The world premiere of our new EP! WOOOO! We’ve called ourselves The Dhalies {DAH-lies}. And this is our first official offering to the music gods, called ‘Pleasing With You’. We recorded this in our living room/bedroom/studio in our box in the sky here in the big City and County of San Francisco. We want to …

Chasing the Sun

I want to start by giving a big shout out to Mum, who turns 21 today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MUM! You’re the greatest and I hope you have a lovely day 🙂 Last week , we had the most amazing weather here in San Francisco, in a city renown for its fog. The sun shone for hours, and I relished putting on shorts for the first time this season. The warmth of the sun on my skin felt so good, I just hope there’s many more days like this to come… I have been so caught up in work (and am starting to think ‘workaholic’ is my middle name), so I have recently been extricating myself and trying to consciously enjoy the moments of my life here in a city I really love. One day last week, we randomly piled into the car and chased the sun all the way down Geary. We wound up at the Sutro Baths to watch the last five minutes of the sun as it descended into the Pacific. I love …
