The Seattle Wrap Up

One of the loveliest parts of my long weekend to Seattle was taking some time out for myself and wandering around the city early on Sunday before the wedding. Very few places were open so early — a far cry from the way I used to travel, starting out at around 2pm. I wandered down to ‘Pike’ (Pike’s Place Market) and watched all the vendors set up as the rain fell. I feel a real affinity with people who don’t bother about the rain and umbrellas, and these were my people. It was Mothers’ Day, and slowly, middle-aged men with little tykes perched on their shoulders or holding the miniature hands of their offspring (sometimes both), descended upon the market to pick their favourite tulips for their mums/wives. Much discussion was had about colour and taste (“What color do you think Mom would like, Maddison?”), with few tantrums. There were some amazing tulip hybrids, and am loving the tulip/daffodil and the tulip/peony combinations. I couldn’t get enough of their colour, their perkiness, their beauty: I …

Greetings from Seattle!

Dear Seattle, Ah, Seattle. There’s so much of you I remember from when I was first here a lifetime ago. Parts of you are beautiful. A stroll down 1st Street reminded me last night. You are a  marvellous mishmash of styles and getting around is pretty easy. Though I usually avoid the tourist traps like the plague, I love your Space Needle. It says so much about that brief period of time when we aimed for the stars, and that resonates with me. I love that you call it a needle. Rock on. Only a city comfortable in its own skin can do that. Makes me want to stick around a join a band. You’re unpretentious and easy-going. I like you. But I’ve gotta ask: what is WITH this rain? Yours, Rebecca

Adventures on Pay-Day: Vegan Soul Food

I have been thinking a lot about traditions, lately, and how to go about forming them in a place where I don’t have much of a history. As I get older, I am really starting to understand just how important traditions are important to feeling settled, involved and to feel a sense of belonging. So I’ve set about trying to create my own, and I aim to live the nostalgia whilst we create it. Recently, I have been enjoying meeting my friend (the Canadian) for a drink and a meal after work on pay-day.  She’s great craic and seeing as she’s a new transplant to the Bay Area, it’s been great building a new friendship — someone I would be friends with no matter where in the world we met or in what situation. Our first official pay-day outing took us on a culinary adventure through Rockridge from happy hour and half-price appetizers at Khana Peena Indian in North Oakland, to the Trattoria La Siciliana, an amazing Italian restaurant in the Elmwood neighbourhood in Berkeley. …

Chasing the Sun

I want to start by giving a big shout out to Mum, who turns 21 today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MUM! You’re the greatest and I hope you have a lovely day 🙂 Last week , we had the most amazing weather here in San Francisco, in a city renown for its fog. The sun shone for hours, and I relished putting on shorts for the first time this season. The warmth of the sun on my skin felt so good, I just hope there’s many more days like this to come… I have been so caught up in work (and am starting to think ‘workaholic’ is my middle name), so I have recently been extricating myself and trying to consciously enjoy the moments of my life here in a city I really love. One day last week, we randomly piled into the car and chased the sun all the way down Geary. We wound up at the Sutro Baths to watch the last five minutes of the sun as it descended into the Pacific. I love …

Radvent 2010 – Day 6: Adventuring

Day Six of Radvent 2010 is all about Adventuring. Abandon your to-do list and go somewhere else. Somewhere new. Somewhere you have wanted to explore. Bring a camera and take a picture to celebrate the moment when you abandoned anxiety and insecurity, embraced imagination and opportunity, and let life unfold.   The best part about living in the city of San Francisco is that so much of it is still new to me. I have been fortunate to venture out of my little five block radius (to and from BART) through our urban hikes and through meeting people who know different parts of town. Leslie has introduced me to the Mission — the joys of the Candystore Collective (16th Street) and of Honey Lavender ice cream at the amazing Bi-Rite Creamery (18th Street @ Delores). With Mary, we’re slowly but surely are tasting all the brew houses and sushi houses in town. On our days off, the American and I have taken to doing ‘urban hikes’ to explore different parts of the city, because even …
